2015-07-06 16:19

China-Latin America and the Caribbean Scientific and Technological Innovation Forum is a sub-forum on a major professional field under the framework of Forum of China and Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (China-CELAC Forum). It is the highest-level forum on scientific and technological innovation China has established, oriented toward the Latin American region, with the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology taking the lead in the coordination.

During his visit to Latin America in July, 2014, President Xi Jinping proposed to “hold the first China-Latin America and the Caribbean Scientific and Technological Innovation Forum in due time”. According to the consensus reached between President Xi and President Rafael Correa of Ecuador during the latter’s visit to China in January, 2015, the first China-Latin America and the Caribbean Scientific and Technological Innovation Forum will be held in Quito, capital city of Ecuador, on September 16th and 17th, 2015. As the rotating presidency of CELAC for 2015, Ecuador will, together with China, invite ministers for science and technology of CELAC member states to attend the Forum. René RAMIREZ, state secretary for higher education, scientific and technological innovation of Ecuador, and Wan Gang, minister for science and technology of China, will co-host the Forum.

China and Latin America enjoy good basis and great potential for cooperation in areas of new energy, new materials, bio-technology, agriculture, space and aviation, and astronomy. The hosting of China-Latin America and the Caribbean Scientific and Technological Innovation Forum will bring scientific and technological cooperation between the two sides to a deeper and broader level.
