Multicar crash in Peru's capital leaves 2 dead, 10 injured

LIMA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and 10 others were injured in a three-vehicle crash Tuesday in the Lurin district of Peru's capital Lima, according to local media.

The accident took place around 8 a.m. at kilometer 27 of the south Pan-American Hwy., when a minivan carrying 13 passengers tried to overtake a trailer truck and ended up crashing into a private vehicle on the road.

La Republica newspaper reported that one of the survivors confirmed the driver of the minivan "wanted to pass the trailer" on his way to Canete province, in southern Lima Region, and then fled the scene after the crash.

The minivan and the private vehicle ended up on the highway median, and the trailer truck was left on the side of the road. The two drivers who remained were taken to the Lurin police station for further questioning.

According to state-run TV Peru, the National Police launched an investigation to determine the causes of the accident, while firefighters, paramedics and local security guards attended to the victims.

Figures from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications' National Road Safety Observatory show that in the first quarter of 2023, there were 24,690 traffic accidents and 12,372 of them occurred in the city of Lima.

In the five-month period from January to May, 1,143 people lost their lives in traffic accidents.
