LIMA, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Peru's new President Dina Boluarte on Thursday said she will seek to "redirect" the country in the wake of a political crisis that saw her predecessor Pedro Castillo impeached on Wednesday.

"I believe that this is an opportunity to redirect the country," she said from the Government Palace in Lima, in her first statements to the press as president.

Boluarte, who was sworn in to complete Castillo's remaining 2021-2026 presidential term, said she was aware that some voices were calling for early elections, but she would consult with "all organizations" later to assess alternatives that could "redirect the country's destiny."

Several lawmakers, governors and social activists from around the country have called for early elections to resolve the political crisis.

Castillo was impeached by Congress for alleged "permanent moral incapacity." He and Boluarte, who served as his vice president, won the general elections in 2021 as the candidates of the Free Peru party.

After being sworn in, Boluarte asked Congress for a "political truce" during her administration and pledged to launch a campaign against corruption.
