NEW YORK, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 jolted near the coast of southern Peru at 21:59:41 GMT on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 49.144 km, was initially determined to be at 16.1418 degrees south latitude and 73.4064 degrees west longitude.
